Amir Khan: “I have to have a shower and pray before I leave my hotel to go to the fight venue”

The festive period is very much upon us, which can only mean one thing. Eating. Lots of eating.

So ahead of his fight with Devon Alexander this Saturday, Sport-locker.net caught up with Amir Khan to find out his typical weekly diet plan (as well as some gym related stuff too!)

BREAKFAST

On a typical day when I am trying to make weight I will stick to my usual diet but cut down slightly on carbs so I can start trimming down. I start the day at 5am with MaxiNutrition Promax Lean shake, then after my early morning running session and then I have oatmeal with blueberries and raspberries or strawberries. At 10:30am I have a second breakfast of scrambled/poached eggs with coconut oil on toast with tomatoes and beans, nothing fried. A pre-lunch snack is a MaxiNutrition Promax Lean bar, chocolate as I have a sweet tooth!

LUNCH

I usually won’t have lunch although I have energy and protein drinks throughout the day. After my second breakfast, my next meal isn’t until about 6pm.

EVENING MEAL

In the evening, I’ll start with soup, then potatoes with some meat. Usually when I am trying to cut down I will eat a lot of fish and chicken instead of red meat as it’s a lot lighter. Also plenty of vegetables and salad. Some vegetables, such as potato are high in carbs so you have to be careful with these foods when you are trying to make weight for a fight.

POST WORKOUT

After the morning session to feed my muscles, I’ll have a MaxiNutrition Promax Lean shake. It’s packed full of protein and contains caffeine as well as natural vitamins. After that, I will have a super-food shake which includes chocolate, acai, rosehip, maca and coconut water. In general after every high intensity session, I’ll have a protein shake.

SNACKS

My snacks through the day include super-foods such as cacao beans and goji berries. As I have a sweet tooth, I like having MaxiNutrition’s Promax Lean bars; all the flavours settle my cravings!

How many calories do you have per day?

6000-6500 per day

What’s your favourite gym exercise?

If I had to pick one it would be squats, as I can see and feel the difference after every set.

What exercises do you hate?

I hate most exercises. Because I push I myself so hard! I try to gain the maximum off all exercises even if I hate it!

What is your highest bench press one rep max?

140kgs

What is your career highlight?

Career highlight is winning Olympic medal. That made me a house whole name over night and was a dream come true. Also winning a world title was my next goal after Olympics and I achieved that also.

What is your making weight top tip?

It is very important to make sure that your body weight never fluctuates to far from your fight weight. As I guide I would say to stay within 5% otherwise you are at risk of trying to lose weight too quickly as your fight is approaching which can be dangerous and detrimental to your training.

Are you superstitious? If so, how?

Superstition – I have to have a shower and pray before I leave my hotel or house to go to the fight venue. Then I know spiritually I’m strong n have god on my side.
